Adjudicators

Meurig Bowen is Chief Executive and Artistic Director of Britten Sinfonia. Born and brought up in London, he was a violist in the London Schools Symphony Orchestra, and he studied music at King’s College, Cambridge, where he was a Choral Scholar. He has worked previously with The Hilliard Ensemble, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Lichfield and Aldeburgh Festivals, and BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has written for BBC Music Magazine, The Guardian and Sydney Morning Herald, has been Head of Jury on a number of occasions for the BBC Young Musician competition, and adjudicated at the Welsh National Eisteddfod in Pontypridd in 2024. We are very pleased that Meurig is going to adjudicate our Celebration Concert in April.

British violinist Sophie Hinson studied firstly at Chetham’s School of Music, then at The Royal Academy of Music.  She is sought after as a soloist, orchestral player, chamber musician and adjudicator. As an orchestral freelancer in the UK she regularly performs and records with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The English Chamber Orchestra and The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, having recently completed international tours to Saudi Arabia, South Korea and China. Sophie is a member of the Award-winning Odora Trio which was founded at The Royal Academy of Music.  They won 1st Prize at The Paris International Music Competition 2024 and were also Platinum Prize Winners at The Saint-Saëns International Music competition in 2023.

Ben Norbury studied music at Wadham College, Oxford, then a Masters in Music Performance (Early Music) in The Hague. Now Head of Exams for London College of Music Exams, Ben is an experienced music educator and examiner, having taught recorder at The Royal College of Music and recorder/woodwind for many years at the Centre for Young Musicians in London. Prior to joining London College of Music Exams Ben worked for Trinity College London where he had wide experience across the organisation from syllabus development to business development and strategy.

Sebastian Scotney is a music journalist and clarinettist. A former professor at the Royal College of Music and an Hon ARAM, he founded the award-winning site London Jazz News (now UK Jazz News) in 2009. He has written about music for the Telegraph, Le Monde and The Arts Desk, has made features for BBC Radio 3, podcasts for The Economist, and regularly writes sleeve notes and press releases for record labels all over Europe. Extracts from his writing appear on the Pulitzer Prizes website. As a clarinettist he recorded the Mozart Clarinet Quintet with the Maggini String Quartet.

Natalie Werner is a graduate in vocal performance and music education from the University of Portland US where she was associate conductor of the University Singers and Women’s Chorale. She also holds a Master of Music degree in vocal performance and choral conducting from the University of Colorado-Boulder, where she served as assistant conductor of the University Choir and the Women’s Chorus. Now based at St Edmundsbury Cathedral as alto vicar choral Natalie is also music and liturgy administrator. Prior to this she was musician in residence at County Upper School Bury where she taught singing and directed the chamber choir. Natalie will be adjudicating classes at our Histon venue.
